Business cards are one of the best ways to easily exchange information with people, whether it's for business or social purposes.  More than just giving someone your phone number or email address, a business card can contain all that and more about who you are and what you do.  Business cards are cheap and easy to get.  You can even customize your own card to your liking.

Business cards usually include a person's name, phone number, email address, job title and company info.  This is why almost all people in the business world use them.  Business cards are customizable and can look just about any way you want with color and design options being endless.  People will exchange business cards as a way to keep in touch with one another in an easy and convenient manner.  This is much easier than fumbling with a pen and paper to scribble down a name and number you're likely not going to remember details about anyway.

Card stock is used to print business cards on.  Some companies go with non-traditional designs or colors to stand out and get noticed.  Business cards are meant to easily fit in someone's pocket or wallet.  While business cards were once only printed in black, printing cards with multiple colors is no longer expensive and is common on most business cards.  Business cards can be printed in standard black or any color of ink.  There is also a special raised print available to really make people take notice of a card.  Most business cards have all the information on one side with the other side being blank.  The blank side is a good place to write additional notes or information that may not be included on the card, such as an alternate phone number or name of another person that works with the person listed on the card. 

Buying Business Cards

There are a number of companies and services that provide business cards to anyone that wants them.  The price of business cards varies based on the company selling them and what kind of design they come in.  A typical price for a box of 100 business cards is around $10 to $15, but there are even some services that can offer 500 cards for the same price.  Many business card services have websites that allow customers to design their own cards and then place an order for them.  The services may also offer hundreds of designs to choose from.  The customer just has to fill out a form detailing the information they want included on the card before placing an order for the card.  The cards are then created and mailed to the customer within a few days.  Customers have no shortage of choices when it comes to creating a unique business card that represents themselves and/or the company they work for.

Alternative Business Cards

If the traditional business card isn't enough to satisfy you, there are other alternative business card types.  Paper is not the only material that business cards can be printed on.  Many people choose other materials like metal, plastic and even wood.  Some cards are printed on brightly colored and clear plastic and may come in shapes other than the traditional rectangle.  These cards are usually used by businesses that specialize in some non-traditional trade.  For instance, a surf shop may have a business card in the shape of a surf board.  That's just one idea.  It all depends on how creative a person wants to be.

Technology has made possible a special CD-ROM based business card.  These business cards are used in a computer disc drive and can contain much more detailed information once opened.  Though these types of business cards may be unique and innovative, they are not commonly used.  The point of a business card is to access contact info rather quickly.  Not many people are going to take the time to put a disc in the computer and mess with trying to "play" your business card in their DVD player. 

With all that being said, business cards are an easy and very inexpensive way to look professional, even if you're not.  When someone asks you if they can have your card, it looks much better when you can actually give them one.  It looks much more professional than ripping off a scrap of paper and writing your name and number down on it.
